Who’s The Boss?

Recently I met with a new client, and one complaint they had about their dealings with web development firms surprised me a little. They said that if they were late in responding or supplying something, they expected the web devs to pursue them far more vigorously. Basically, they want someone to manage them as part of managing the project and not merely defer to their authority.

In itself this isn’t surprising, and it’s something I tend to do anyway, but it’s unusual for a client to recognise and articulate this up front. From now on I’ll be addressing the issue more clearly, making sure to ask “How bossy do you want me to be?”-type questions at the planning stage.
