Read Error

Unlike Simon, I’ve not had a CD explode in the drive, but an old CD-R did decide to let its metallic layer peel off and shred inside my iMac. Luckily I managed to retrieve most of the pieces with careful use of torch and tweezers, and the drive seems to work, so there’s hopefully no need to perform more invasive surgery.

A bit of a challenge for the error correction algorithms

The rest of the old discs are going to be fed into a device that’s designed to shred them more thoroughly; they’re probably only backups of highly valuable, irreplaceable data…
