Inkscape

Open source cross-platform SVG editor, looks usable for simple vector illustration, logos etc.

Expression

Allows you to paint with brushes that loosely resemble real materials, but using vectors rather than bitmaps. It’s definitely worth a try if you have a graphics tablet for your Windows PC or Mac. Microsoft wants you to login via their Passport system before downloading.

ArtRage

Windows-only natural media bitmap paint package, limited but fun to play around with.

Pixen

Pixel art software for the Mac, designed specifically for creating intricate bitmap mosaics.

GIMP

Well-known all-rounder for editing and converting bitmap graphics, available for numerous platforms.
